It seems like we deserve to feel jealous to our friends that had their chances to watch BJORK’s concert on February, 12th 2008. Tennis Indoor Senayan Jakarta and 3 Second’s contributor, Emon, witnessed the spectacular performance from her “The Volta Tour” concert. Here’s our coverage.
To be honest I’m not a big fan of Bjork, but personally I’m curious with Bjork’s performance in this concert. With her songs that’s a little weird to some people and her style that is always unusual, it made me more curious to come to her concert. And you know what? All my curiosity been paid off after I witnessed the concert. I don’t regret spending the money to watch this concert. At 6pm that day me and my friend were both already there at Tennis Indoor Senayan and it turns out there was already so many people queuing. The swift rain that night didn’t make Bjork’s lovers to abandon their chance to watch this event. There were so many people there on that night, and what’s interesting is that those people that came to watch Bjork dressed up weird and different too. There was of course the celebrity bunch like Nirina, Duo Ratu, Desta, Dagink, David Naif, Coklat, Giring Nidji, Vincent club 80’s, Ayu Sita and dea Ananda. Well, Bjork is one of the singer that always steal people’s attention because not only her voice and her music that is unique but also her appearance that’s always extra ordinary. Maybe those are the things that made this Bjork’s concert filled with celebrities as her audiences. Hmm..maybe her style or something in her concert could be used for their inspirations too..
At 7pm WIB I was already inside Tennis Indoor Senayan and when I looked at the stage.. WOW.. The stage arrangement was so unique and really spectacular. It turns out the stage were part of the tour Volta concept, which resembles Noah’s Ark. There were a few giant flags with animal pictures on them. The colors were dominated with pink, orange, green, and yellow; with 3 plasmas and 2 screens on the right and left of the stage. The screen was used to take react-able pictures (unique synthesizer) and other personnel with a very professional angle. The concert started 30 minutes late from the scheduled time though. It started around 20.30pm WIB which should already start since 20.00pm WIB. . The lights were turned off and … bam! There she was Bjork came out with “Earth Intruders” as her first song. Even though the sound system on her first song was a little bit off, it didn’t bother me and other audiences to move our body and dance through it. The diva couldn’t stop moving and was very energetic throughout all her songs made her looked like she was in her own “playground” on stage. Something very interesting in her concert though, there was a group of marching band with flags on top of their heads and were also “playing” with Bjork in the whole concert. On one session, the stage light show was following the beat of the song from this Iceland diva. Audiences were made to move and dance non-stop with the beats from her songs that followed Bjork that kept running backwards and forwards moving like a little girl that was playing in her own world.
Bjork looked like she was enjoying her stage performance. She showed up with a costume that looked like English royalty from the year 1600 with unique make up that has red triangle pattern on her forehead and it was glow in the dark! As usual, Bjork’s costumes are always eccentric and different from other singers. The color of the English royalty costume that she wore was bright red and golden color with the combination colors of the stage and also for the show Bjork wasn’t wearing any shoes or sandals a.k.a barefoot. The other thing that was unique from the concert was the costume of the brass section players that was about 20 people. They were wearing the same English royalty costume and also wearing the same make up like the diva with red triangle patterns on their foreheads and they were glow in the dark too. She sang some of her songs like “Unravel”, “All is full of love”, “Joga”, “Pagan Poetry”, “Pleasure is all mine”, “Cover me”, “Anchor song” and “Declare Independence”. But something that made me a little disappointed was she didn’t sing the song “It’s oh so quite”, whereas that was the song that I’ve been waiting for.
Overall The Volta Tour concert was really good and two-thumbs up for them because of the nuance of the stage and of course Bjork’s attraction that brought me and other audiences to her world.
Well, it seems like Java Musikindo as the promoter from this Bjork concert is successful once again in promoting concerts like this in Indonesia. I can’t wait for the next concerts that are coming up this year. So.. I’ll see you all there…
